Holding a Light: A Gentle Approach to Spiritual Direction and Animal Chaplaincy

There is a moment, early in any spiritual direction or animal‑companionship relationship, when a person arrives carrying questions, they may not yet have words for. Something in their life is shifting—an inner restlessness, a grief that won’t settle, a longing for clarity, or a desire to reconnect with the sacred woven through their days. My role is not to diagnose, fix, or steer. Instead, I walk alongside them with a lantern in hand to help shed light on the path before them.

The light is a symbol for presence, attention, and shared illumination. It casts just enough light for us to see the next few steps, but not so much that it overwhelms the mystery or obscures the client’s own wisdom. I am careful not to let my shadow fall across their path; this work is never about my answers. It is about helping them discover their own.

A Path Illuminated Through Dialogue

As we talk, reflect, and listen together, small treasures begin to appear—insights, memories, images, or quiet truths that rise from within the client’s own experience. These treasures are not things I hand to them; they are things they uncover. My task is simply to notice them, to hold space for what is emerging, and to help them recognize the significance of what they themselves have voiced. To offer a gentle light as their guide.

In animal companionship, this often includes the deep bonds we share with our animal kin, the grief that comes with illness or loss, and the profound wisdom animals offer us about presence, loyalty, and unconditional love. Here too, the light helps us see what is tender and true.

The Light Changes Hands

Over time, something shifts. The client begins to trust their own inner light—their intuition, their clarity, and their connection to the sacred. The path ahead becomes less intimidating, not because it is suddenly easy, but because they have learned how to illuminate it from within.

My greatest joy in this work is witnessing that moment when a client realizes they can trust this light on their own. They can walk forward with confidence, curiosity, and a renewed sense of belonging to their own life.

A Companion, a Presence

Whether in spiritual direction or in the tender work of animal chaplaincy, I do not lead from the front or push from behind. I walk beside. I listen. I help hold the light steady until the client is ready to carry it themselves.

This is the heart of my practice: a shared journey, a gentle illumination, and the quiet, steady belief that each person already carries the wisdom they seek.
